Opting out

My wife and I are both self-employed and we currently purchase individual family insurance on the private market. Our current health plan is a high-deductible plan. This means that we accept more risk in trade for lower premiums. We just received our 2014 plan information from our current insurer. As expected, our old plan is no longer offered. The new plan premium, copay, and deductible have all increased substantially. And all the increases are directly related to Obamacare regulations. If I’m not mistaken, the deductible we are being offered for 2014 will be illegal in 2015 due to delayed regulations. The net result will be even higher premiums in 2015. So, we have decided to opt-out of the Obamacare scam.

We will join Medi-Share, a healthcare sharing ministry. Instead of putting our faith in yet another failed government program, we will put our faith in God and our fellow Christians. Membership in Medi-Share allows an exemption from the individual mandate. The monthly contributions to Medi-Share are less than half of what we are currently paying for high-deductible insurance (for roughly the same coverage).

The net result is more money in our pocket every month, and we will not be forced to support a government program that violates our sense of liberty!
